Kulturabend - Lecture Mike Larkin presents: The Civil War in New Orleans The Civil War in New Orleans tells the story of the city and region during that most turbulent period in our history. The city fell after only a token defense, so many of the uncomfortable elements of the narrative were deliberately excised. As a consequence, the real life stories of courageous Southern women facing seemingly insurmountable challenges were not adequately told. Similarly, the accounts of thousands of black men and women who struggled to find their rightful place amidst the chaos of war were also not sufficiently mentioned. Missing too are the stories of the thousands of local creole and immigrant men, blacks and whites, who filled the ranks of Union regiments occupying the city. But also largely forgotten was the decisive impact made in this region by locally raised regiments, batteries and battalions that fought for the Confederacy. Many of these soldiers died in battles far from home. Also erased from the narrative were Union soldiers stationed here. The Civil War in New Orleans tells these stories of mostly ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances and how they coped. It is our history and most of it took place in neighborhoods we now call home. Michael "Mike" Larkin is a Retired Lieutenant Colonel USAF. He was shot at in three wars, author of two works; The Civil in New Orleans Book I and Book 2. He has been a member of Deutsches Haus since 2005, co-leading the Main Food Tent during Oktoberfest. He and his wife Paula Fruthaler have been together for 56 years.
