German Men’s Choir – Concert
The program explores the cultural connection between Germany and the United States, bringing into dialogue the richness of German choral tradition and the vitality of American musical heritage. Performed by the Chorgemeinschaft Lied Hoch Glückstadt, the evening reflects both shared influences and distinct musical voices. The first part of the concert is devoted to sacred works and spirituals, placing German Romantic repertoire alongside American spiritual traditions. Spirituals such as My Lord, What a Mornin’ and Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho bear witness to a profound history of faith and resilience, while works including Franz Schubert’s Heilig and Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria exemplify the depth and sonority of the German choral tradition. A special highlight of the evening is a set of art songs performed by soprano Caroline Bruker and bass-baritone Sönke Tams Freier. Drawing on their American and German backgrounds, they present a program that reflects this cultural dialogue on a more intimate scale. The selection includes songs by Amy Beach, set to German poetry, alongside German Romantic Lieder by composers such as Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The choir further presents traditional and folk-inspired repertoire, including Die Forelle, Der Lindenbaum, and the North German favorite De Hamborger Veermaster, offering insight into the musical heritage of northern Germany. The concert concludes with a selection of widely beloved songs that resonate across cultures and generations. From You Raise Me Up to Love Me Tender, Sweet Caroline, and Vois sur ton chemin, this final section invites the audience to experience music as a shared language that transcends borders.
