Members & Friends of the Deutsches Haus,

The Deutsches Haus is participating in a great fundraiser through Winn Dixie’s Community Pals Program. There is no cost to participate and Winn Dixie will donate 2 to 2.5 percent of what you spend at Winn Dixie to the Deutsches Haus. We can earn up to $3600 semi-annually.

If you shop at Winn Dixie, you can help by signing up to participate in this program. All you need to do is obtain a free Winn Dixie Customer Reward card if you do not already have one and then link the card to the Deutsches Haus once by presenting the attached coupon (pdf file) to the cashier. If your card is already linked to another charity and you want the entire amount to go to the Deutsches Haus, then call 985-549-6764 and request removal of the other organization. If you have more than one organization linked to your Customer Reward Card, the donation will be split equally between the charities.

Anyone can link their card, so ask your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc to participate.

In order for us to continue with this program, total quarterly purchases on our behalf need to exceed $5,000. We have not reached the maximum that we can earn, so we need your help in expanding the number of people who have linked their cards to the Deutsches Haus. Please make an effort to spread the word!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through the Deutsches Haus.

Thanks for your support.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

The annual Oktoberfest celebration sponsored by Deutsches Haus, a non-profit organization that has been celebrating and preserving German heritage and culture, will be held this year at River Town in Kenner.

Deutsches Haus and its members have been celebrating German culture and tradition in New Orleans since its creation in 1928. Oktoberfest, historically held at the Deutsches Hause’ former location in downtown New Orleans, has been the group’s signature event, drawing thousands of visitors and participants each year. Deutsches Haus was forced to relocate last year and has set up temporary operations at the American Legion Hall on Ridgewood drive in Metairie. This temporary location, however, is not equipped to handle the food, dance, and drink that have become the staples of Oktoberfest.

To fill this void, Kenner Mayor Michael S. Yenni has offered River Town as a venue for Oktobersfest 2011.

“We look forward to welcoming the Oktoberfest to the City of Kenner and hope it’s a huge success,” Yenni said. “We look forward to the opportunity to spotlight Rivertown”.

The celebration will take place Oct. 14-17 and 21-23.

Bringing record crowds last year, Oktoberfest, has become more than a place to try great German beer, but also Haus-made German food, live Polka and oompah music, and the now-famous German chicken dance. Oktoberfest’s hours will be from 4-11 p.m. on Friday Oct. 14 and 21, from noon-11 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 15 and 22, and from noon-8 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 16 and 23.

By Theodore P. Mahne, Times-Picayune

The languid, poetic language of Tennessee Williams resonates with us because it drips with beauty, sweating like a silver mint julep cup about to leave a ring on the chifforobe, where it was left by a careless gentleman caller.

That language also lends itself to excesses of parody.

An entertaining troupe of players has decided to tackle Williams’ oeuvre this summer. As it is just too hot for serious drama – even for felines perched on prefabricated metal roofs – they’ve gone for the humor, blending together the characters from several of Williams’ best known plays. The result, “The Glass Mendacity,” now playing at the relocated Deutsches Haus in Metairie, is a delightful ride on a streetcar full of laughs.
